A 28-year-old Singaporean woman, Sherylynn Kok, shared the challenges she faced after winning RM800,000 at Genting Highlands.
During a weekend getaway in April with her boyfriend and family, Kok switched slot machines after a losing streak and hit a jackpot feature offering four tiers. Within minutes, she won the grand prize.
Casino staff and security verified her win before escorting her to the cashier, where she received eight bundles of RM100,000 each—“crazy heavy,” she recalled. Security then accompanied her back to her hotel.
The next morning, Kok faced a bigger challenge: carrying the money back to Singapore. At the airport, she learned that large sums required prior Bank Negara approval. With banks closed over the weekend, wire transfers weren’t possible, so Kok and her boyfriend stayed behind while her parents returned home.
The following day, Kok opened a dual-currency OCBC account, allowing easy access to both ringgit and Singapore dollars.
A disciplined gambler, Kok emphasized she never plays to earn money but for leisure on idle weekends. After her win, friends suggested investing, but she prefers keeping the cash safely in the bank and maintaining her regular lifestyle to avoid impulsive spending.
She sees the windfall as a chance to slow down at work, but clarified it’s not a ticket to early retirement.
