Six Accused of Human Trafficking and Child Sexual Exploitation in Johor

Date:

Six individuals, including a 17-year-old boy, were brought before two Sessions Courts in Johor on Tuesday (July 15) to face multiple charges related to human trafficking and child sexual exploitation.

The accused – Sham Chee Fei, 33; Kuek Pei Lin, 19; Lee Chun Kit, 28; Tommy Voo Tze Hau, 27; a 17-year-old boy; and Abdul Rahufur Rahim Idris, 30 – were slapped with a range of serious charges involving three victims: a 15-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy, and a 26-year-old man.

In the first courtroom, all five except Abdul Rahufur pleaded not guilty before Judge Thalha Bachok @ Embok Mok to trafficking the three victims for labour exploitation through deceptive means. The alleged offences occurred between March 23 and May 23 at a house along Jalan Lagenda 34 in Taman Lagenda Putra, Kulai.

They were charged under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) Act 2007, read with Section 34 of the Penal Code. Upon conviction, the offence carries a sentence of life imprisonment or a minimum of five years’ jail and whipping. Additional charges were filed under Section 12 of the same Act, carrying up to 20 years’ jail and a fine.

In a separate courtroom, Kuek, Voo, and the teenage accused also claimed trial to two counts of producing child sexual abuse material involving the same teenage victims. They face charges under Section 5 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act (SOACA) 2017, which carries a sentence of up to 30 years’ imprisonment and a minimum of six strokes of the cane.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rahufur was charged under Section 15(f) of SOACA 2017 for non-physical sexual assault, allegedly instructing the female teenage victim to perform sexual acts on the male victim. He pleaded not guilty and faces up to 10 years’ jail, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both.

Lee also faced an additional charge of possessing child sexual abuse material—two images and two videos—on his phone, allegedly found at the same house on June 20. The offence falls under Section 10 of SOACA 2017, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ jail, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutors Nur Diyana Zubir and Nur Farah Wahida Shahudin. The accused were represented by their respective counsels.

Bail amounts ranged from RM6,000 to RM35,000, with all individuals ordered to comply with strict conditions, including surrendering passports, monthly police check-ins, and avoiding contact with witnesses.

Both courts fixed August 13, 14, and 19 for the next mention and document submission.
