SMK Chung Hua Miri Wins Two Golds and One Silver at World Robot Olympiad

Date:

SMK Chung Hua Miri’s robotic teams delivered a stellar performance at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) International competition in Singapore, winning two gold medals and one silver, contributing to Malaysia’s overall championship triumph—the country’s 13th WRO title since 2005.

The competition, held from November 26 to 28 at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, was the largest in the event’s 21-year history, attracting around 3,300 young robotics enthusiasts from over 100 countries.

Malaysia’s 16-team contingent, comprising 48 students and 16 mentors, brought home a total of four golds, four silvers, and two excellence awards, reclaiming the overall championship title.

SMK Chung Hua Miri excelled in multiple categories, earning Gold in Robomission Junior, Gold in Robomission Senior, and Silver in Future Innovator Senior, the latter as part of the prestigious Aramco Innovation Award.

Team Skylux—composed of students Elson Kieu Chee Yang, Fung Ashley, and Tan Yi Xuan—secured second place in the Aramco Innovation Award, placing just behind Costa Rica’s Team Sprout and ahead of Australia’s The Simpsons. Their achievement comes with an all-expenses-paid innovation experience in Seoul, South Korea, featuring academic exchanges, industry interactions, and cultural immersion with leading universities and technology innovators.

Principal Lai Jia Ling expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Sarawak Education Department, Miri District Education Office, the Parent-Teacher Association, and parents, highlighting the pivotal role of parental support in nurturing student confidence and growth.

Meanwhile, the school’s Board of Directors Chairperson Tan Sri Datuk Paduka Chai Yu Lan praised the teams for promoting creativity, collaboration, and innovation through WRO. She emphasised that the school’s commitment to robotics development, along with the guidance of Principal Lai, team advisors, and the coach, was key to the students’ success.

WRO, a project-based competition, challenges participants to design robotics solutions addressing global issues, allowing students to integrate STEM concepts into practical learning and everyday life.
