Smugglers Abandon 1,170 Cartons Of Liquor As Authorities Close In

Date:

An attempt to smuggle 1,170 cartons of alcoholic beverages worth more than RM221,000 through Limbang waters was successfully foiled by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) last night.

The seizure was made by the MMEA Miri Zone team during a routine patrol operation at about 10.15pm, approximately 0.1 nautical miles west of the Limbang Jetty.

Miri Zone Maritime Director Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said the success was based on intelligence gathered regarding suspected smuggling activities in the area.

Upon inspection, officers discovered 1,170 cartons of liquor wrapped in black plastic and neatly arranged, believed to be intended for illegal distribution in the local market.

He said the items were believed to have been abandoned by suspects who fled the scene after detecting the presence of enforcement authorities.

Authorities also believe the smuggling activity is linked to cross-border alcohol trafficking, driven by high demand ahead of the festive season.

The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967, and all seized items have been transported to the MMEA Miri Zone headquarters for documentation before being handed over to investigating officers for further action.
