Son Allegedly Stabbed Bank Executive Mother Over “Ah-Long” Debt

Date:

Preliminary police investigations reveal that a man suspected of murdering his own mother was burdened with high-interest loans (“ah long”) taken in Penang.

Kota Setar District Police Chief, Asst. Comm. Syed Basri Syed Ali, said the suspect also faced financial pressure from paying RM700 monthly for a p-hailing motorcycle rental and room rent. He added that investigations are ongoing to determine the full motive behind the incident, beyond financial issues, while police continue searching for evidence.

Autopsy results confirmed the victim died from stab wounds to the chest, with injuries to the left lung and heart causing severe internal bleeding capable of causing death quickly. Doctors determined that the stabbing and slashing injuries were caused by a hard, sharp object, likely a kitchen knife.

The victim, 52-year-old Zahrullail Basir, an operations executive at a bank, was found dead with three stab wounds, reportedly killed by her son last Monday.

Police arrested the suspect, the eldest son, at 8:34 p.m. two nights ago on a tour bus en route to Selangor. The 29-year-old is remanded for seven days until 9 February to assist in the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
