Police are searching for a man who tried to purchase RM30,000 worth of jewellery using counterfeit money at a gold shop in Chabang Tiga yesterday afternoon.
Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the suspect, believed to be in his 30s, entered the shop alone, wearing a white prayer cap, sunglasses, and a pink face mask.
Investigations revealed the man asked to see several gold bracelets and took photos of them before attempting to make the purchase.
“After exiting and re-entering the shop twice, the suspect finally attempted to buy jewellery worth RM30,000. The 36-year-old sales assistant asked him to count the payment, which the suspect had bundled inside a yellow plastic bag,” Azli said in a statement today.
The sales assistant grew suspicious when he noticed the edges of the notes were white. A struggle ensued as the assistant tried to inspect the notes further.
Realising his plan had been exposed, the man fled in a dark blue Perodua Axia parked outside the shop, which bore a fake registration number.

Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the shop and nearby areas as part of the investigation. No jewellery was lost during the incident.
The case is being investigated under Section 489B of the Penal Code for the use of counterfeit money.
