A 14-year-old boy allegedly stole a public transport bus in Norway and drove it approximately 200 kilometres into Sweden before being arrested, according to Norwegian police on Tuesday, as reported by German news agency dpa.
Authorities said the transport company alerted police in the early hours after discovering the vehicle had been stolen. Its location was later tracked using satellite technology, which showed the bus had crossed into neighbouring Sweden.
Swedish police subsequently detained the teenager near the city of Gothenburg in the country’s southwest. Norwegian child welfare officials are now reportedly travelling to take custody of the boy.
Investigators said the motive behind the incident remains unclear. Police officer Rune Isaksen told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that the teenager had travelled alone after taking the bus from Vestby, about 40 kilometres south of Oslo.
The extraordinary case has drawn comparisons to a recent incident in Germany, where a 15-year-old boy stole a bus to drive his girlfriend roughly 130 kilometres to school.
