An 18-year-old teenager was killed while his friend was seriously injured after their motorcycle crashed into the rear of a broken-down lorry at Kilometre 216 of the southbound PLUS Highway on Monday afternoon.
The two victims were believed to be on their way home after delivering a pair of shoes belonging to the pillion rider’s brother at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Seremban.
Melaka Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Superintendent Muhammad Zaki Ramat said the accident, which occurred at about 2.35pm, involved a Scania lorry and a Yamaha Y15ZR motorcycle carrying the two youths.
Preliminary investigations found that the lorry, which was travelling from Kuala Lumpur towards the south, had suffered a technical issue with its rear right tyre and had stopped near the exit leading to the main highway lane without any warning signs.
Shortly after, the motorcycle is believed to have lost control before crashing into the rear right side of the stationary lorry.
The rider was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries to the head and face.
Meanwhile, the pillion rider sustained head injuries and a fractured wrist and was rushed to Melaka Hospital for further treatment.
The victim’s body was sent to the Alor Gajah Hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Authorities have urged anyone with information on the incident to come forward to assist investigations.
