Teen Survivor Says She ‘Doesn’t Sleep at Night’ After Court Ruling

Date:

A teenage girl who was raped at knifepoint by three boys while they filmed the horrifying assault has broken her silence, condemning the court after her attackers were spared prison sentences.

The 15-year-old victim said she now lives in constant fear and struggles to sleep following the traumatic attack, admitting she is terrified of leaving her home knowing the boys responsible are still free.

The shocking case sparked nationwide outrage after two 15-year-old boys were handed three-year Youth Rehabilitation Orders instead of jail for raping two girls and recording the assaults on their phones.

A third boy, now aged 14, also received an 18-month rehabilitation order for his involvement in one of the attacks.

During the trial at Southampton Crown Court, the court heard both victims were outnumbered and subjected to prolonged abuse in terrifying ordeals that left deep emotional scars.

The second victim, who was 14 when the attack happened, revealed she was cornered by one of the boys, threatened with a knife and ordered to leave behind her mobile phone and AirTag tracking device before being forced to walk to a field near Fordingbridge recreation ground in Hampshire.

The court heard one of the boys then pushed her to the ground, cut her clothes and raped her while the others filmed the assault. Some of the disturbing footage was later circulated online.

One recovered clip reportedly showed the girl lying motionless on the ground with her face buried in her hands after the attack.

Speaking publicly about the ordeal, the victim questioned why the boys were not jailed despite committing such serious crimes.

“Why would you avoid criminalising someone who has done a criminal act?” she asked.

The teenager also revealed the trauma continues to haunt her every day through vivid flashbacks.

“No matter how much I scrub or try to get rid of the feeling, I can still feel their hands on me. It doesn’t even feel like my body anymore,” she said.

She added that the flashbacks can strike unexpectedly at any time, leaving her emotionally overwhelmed even without triggers.

Judge Nicholas Rowland had defended the non-custodial sentences by saying he wanted to avoid “criminalising these children unnecessarily”.

He also cited the boys’ young age, low intelligence, limited understanding of consent and vulnerability to peer pressure.

However, the victim said the sentencing left her feeling punished instead of protected.

“I just wanted to go outside without the fear of seeing them. It feels like I went through all of that for nothing,” she said.

The teenager also admitted the attack and lengthy court proceedings severely affected her studies and future plans.

Currently sitting for her GCSE examinations, she said she has fallen behind academically and may need to delay college by a year.

“I do want a future. It’s just difficult to see where I can end up now. I’m still scared,” she added.

Following public outrage, Attorney General Richard Hermer referred the case to the Court of Appeal under the unduly lenient sentence scheme.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also described the case as “appalling”, praising both victims for their bravery in speaking out.

Police investigations later uncovered another teenage victim who was allegedly raped by the same boys during a separate 90-minute attack in an underpass in November 2024.

The offenders were convicted of multiple rape charges linked to both incidents, along with offences involving indecent images of a child.
