A devastating fire at an automobile components manufacturing facility in central South Korea has claimed the lives of at least ten individuals, according to reports from authorities today. The incident, which occurred yesterday in the city of Daejeon, has triggered a massive search and rescue operation as emergency teams continue to look for four people who remain unaccounted for. This industrial disaster has left dozens more injured, with several victims currently in critical condition at local medical facilities.
The blaze reportedly broke out at approximately 1:00 pm (0400 GMT) yesterday, rapidly spreading through the factory premises where 170 employees were estimated to be working at the time. An official from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, which oversees disaster management, informed AFP that 59 individuals sustained various injuries during the incident. Out of those injured, 25 are reported to be in a critical state, while another 34 victims suffered less severe injuries and are receiving ongoing medical attention.
Recovery efforts have been particularly challenging for emergency responders, with one body discovered on the second floor of the building while the remaining nine victims were located on the third floor. According to the Yonhap news agency, firefighters faced significant delays in entering the structure due to the immediate risk of a building collapse following the intense heat of the fire. The complexity of the scene has necessitated a cautious approach to ensure the safety of the rescue personnel involved.
Compounding the danger at the site is the presence of approximately 200 kilograms of sodium stored within the facility, a highly reactive substance that poses a significant explosion risk if not managed correctly. This chemical hazard has added a layer of urgency and technical difficulty to the cooling and containment operations. As of now, authorities have not officially determined the exact cause of the ignition, and a full forensic investigation is expected to commence once the site is fully secured.
In response to the tragedy, the office of South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has issued an executive order to mobilise all available national resources, including specialized personnel and advanced equipment, to support the ongoing rescue and recovery mission. The government has prioritised the location of the missing workers and the provision of high-level medical care for those in critical condition. This incident marks one of the most significant industrial fires in the region in recent years, prompting calls for a review of safety protocols in high-risk manufacturing plants.
