Three Vietnamese Nationals Arrested For Ecstasy Production Using ChatGPT

Date:

South Korean customs authorities announced on Wednesday that three Vietnamese nationals have been apprehended for allegedly smuggling drug precursors into the country to manufacture MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy.

This landmark case marks the first time South Korean officials have successfully uncovered an entire illicit supply chain, spanning from the initial smuggling of precursor chemicals to the domestic production and distribution of synthetic narcotics. The suspects were referred to the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office in January following a comprehensive investigation by Incheon Airport Regional Customs.

The group is accused of importing essential precursor chemicals, specifically safrole and MDP-2-P glycidate, from Vietnam via air cargo. Safrole is a key component of sassafras oil, while glycidate is a chemical compound frequently utilised in the creation of synthetic drugs. According to police reports, the volume of seized materials was sufficient to produce approximately 30,000 ecstasy pills. To evade law enforcement, the suspects reportedly operated out of a rented low-rise apartment, which they had converted into a clandestine laboratory equipped with pill presses and professional manufacturing tools.

The investigation was initiated in August 2025 after customs officials discovered 800g of cannabis concealed within food products arriving from Thailand. Through a controlled delivery operation, authorities tracked the parcel to a 25-year-old Vietnamese national, whose subsequent arrest led to the discovery of 527g of glycidate in his vehicle. His girlfriend was also detained as an accomplice involved in the smuggling and distribution network. Further analysis of mobile phone records and delivery histories uncovered additional shipments and linked the duo to a wider criminal ring.

A third suspect was later apprehended in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, where he was found to be actively manufacturing ecstasy. In a sophisticated twist, authorities revealed that the man had utilised ChatGPT to learn the chemical processes required for MDMA production. He reportedly coordinated with suppliers in Vietnam using the encrypted messaging application Zalo to facilitate the arrival of 2,671g of safrole, which was seized during his arrest in December.

Park Heon, the commissioner of the Incheon Airport Main Customs Office, emphasised the significance of the bust, noting the unprecedented nature of dismantling a complete domestic production line. He stated that the authorities remain committed to strengthening surveillance and cracking down on increasingly complex drug-related crimes. The case highlights a growing trend of using legitimate technology and air cargo infrastructure to establish localized drug manufacturing hubs within South Korea.
