French police arrested a 25-year-old man on Friday in connection with a series of stabbings that injured three women on the Paris metro, as the city was crowded with end-of-year holiday celebrations.
The attacks occurred on Line 3, which runs through central Paris, with the victims assaulted at three separate stations between 4.15pm and 4.45pm. According to transport operator RATP, the incidents took place at République, Arts et Métiers—both near the Marais district—and Opéra station.
An AFP journalist at République station witnessed security personnel assisting a woman who had been stabbed in the leg and appeared visibly shaken. Emergency services responded quickly, and all three victims were taken to hospital. Police said two of the women were transported by emergency crews, while a third later sought medical treatment on her own. None of the victims were reported to be in critical condition.
Using surveillance camera footage and mobile phone tracking, authorities were able to locate the suspect in the Val-d’Oise region north of Paris. Prosecutors said the suspect was arrested at 6.55pm, less than three hours after the first attack.
Paris police chief Patrice Faure praised investigators for their swift response, while Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez commended the coordinated efforts of the police units involved in the arrest.
Transport police have opened an investigation into attempted homicide and assault with a weapon. Additional security teams were deployed along Line 3 to reassure passengers and reinforce safety.
European capitals remain on heightened alert during the festive season amid concerns over violent attacks and public disorder. Last week, Nuñez urged authorities to maintain “maximum vigilance” nationwide, citing a high terrorist threat level and calling for increased security, particularly on public transport networks.
