A recent incident at Paris airport has gone viral after a female passenger used sheer force to stuff her oversized luggage into a carry-on baggage sizer, all to avoid paying a hefty £180 (around RM1,035) penalty. The dramatic moment was captured and uploaded to TikTok by the traveler herself, Arina, racking up over 10 million views and sparking widespread discussion online.
The event occurred on July 23 as Arina was preparing to fly from Paris to London with Spanish budget airline Vueling. Before boarding, she was asked to place her bright yellow suitcase into the baggage sizer to check if it met the strict carry-on limits (maximum 40×30×20 cm). Despite visible difficulty, Arina managed to push the suitcase into the sizer and pull it out again, leaving the ground staff visibly stunned.
In her TikTok video titled, “Never give up—especially not over €200,” Arina said the staff were surprised she actually succeeded and even complimented her strength. She defended her actions by saying she had carefully measured the luggage beforehand to meet Vueling’s size rules and stood firm in refusing to pay extra fees.
Vueling, like many low-cost European airlines, enforces strict hand luggage size policies. Passengers with oversized bags can face penalties of up to €88 (around RM455), and in some cases, ground staff reportedly receive bonuses for catching such violations. Other airlines like Ryanair, EasyJet, and Wizz Air have also faced similar scrutiny over staff incentives tied to luggage enforcement.
Arina’s determined move resonated with many on social media, with users commenting things like, “Her face says ‘I told you so,’” and “This is so real.” Others praised her confidence and creativity in tackling the challenge head-on.
The viral moment highlights the growing tension between budget airlines’ strict luggage rules and travelers’ frustrations.
