Two Dead After Crane Collapses at Johor Power Plant, Site Shut Down

Date:

The Johor Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) has issued two prohibition notices and ordered the temporary closure of the site where a crane collapsed at a power plant in Pontian on Tuesday, pending the outcome of investigations.

In a statement, DOSH said it is investigating the cause of the incident, which killed two workers and injured three others when a coal-handling crane collapsed at the Tanjung Bin power plant area near Kukup at about 1pm. The collapse also caused a small fire at the site.

DOSH warned that legal action would be taken against any party found to have violated the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.

“The department treats every workplace accident seriously and urges employers to remain vigilant in ensuring occupational safety and health,” the statement said.

Employers were also reminded to conduct risk assessments for all work activities and to implement appropriate control measures to eliminate or reduce potential hazards.

The two victims were identified as Muhammad Alfarid Ahmad, 19, and Muhammad Amaluddin Hisamudin, 22. Three other workers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said a thorough, transparent and comprehensive investigation must be conducted. Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, called on DOSH, the police, the Energy Commission and other relevant technical agencies to work together to determine the exact cause of the incident.
