Date:

Two men were killed and six others injured after the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) they were travelling in crashed at Km3 of Jalan Paka–Bandar Al Muktaffi Billah Shah, near the Paka Fire and Rescue Station, this morning.

The accident occurred at about 7.30am and involved a Toyota Avanza carrying eight adult men who were on their way from their rented house in Paka to their workplace in Santong Paka.

The deceased were identified as Muhammad Asyraf Mohd Zahir, 21, and Siraj Norman, 27, a Pakistani national. Both were pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining severe injuries.

Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Zone 2 chief Rohaya Jamil said the department received an emergency call at 7.34am. Firefighters from the Paka station were dispatched and found that six victims had already been rescued by members of the public, while two were trapped inside the vehicle.

“Firefighters used rescue equipment to extricate the two trapped victims, but both were confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel,” she said, adding that the operation concluded at about 10.48am.

The six injured victims were taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were handed over to police for further action.

District police chief Superintendent Maizura Abdul Kadir said preliminary investigations indicated that the vehicle may have lost control before skidding off the road and crashing into an electric pole.

The injured were sent to Dungun Hospital, and the bodies were taken to the hospital’s forensic unit. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
