Two Assistant Directors at Perak State Education Department (JPN) appeared in Ipoh Sessions Court today, facing three charges of accepting bribes totaling RM4,000 between 2020 and 2022.
The accused, Wan Muhamad Huzairi Shukri, 42, and Nor Haslan Nor Zaman, 46, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi.
According to the charges, both civil servants were accused of jointly receiving a valuable item without consideration – RM2,000 deposited into the bank account of Wan Muhamad Huzairi, who serves as Assistant Director (DG10) of the Student Talent Development Unit (Co-Curriculum) at JPN Perak. The payment was allegedly made by a company manager under instructions from Nor Haslan, the Head of the same unit. The accused were aware that the RM38,000 transaction involved official duties handled by the manager. The incident reportedly took place at Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) Medan Gopeng branch in Ipoh on 27 August 2020.
In addition, the duo faced two more charges for receiving RM1,500 and RM500 from the same individual at the same bank on 6 January and 29 March 2022. All charges are framed under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
During proceedings, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecutor G. Nanthini proposed bail of RM10,000 per charge, along with conditions to report monthly to the nearest MACC office and not interfere with witnesses.
Their lawyer, Hafiz Norkhan, requested the court to grant bail according to his clients’ financial capacity, noting that both had cooperated throughout the investigation, had no prior criminal record, earned RM6,000–RM7,000, and supported their families, including their parents.
The court granted bail of RM5,000 per accused, with a requirement to report to MACC Ipoh on the first Saturday of each month until the case concludes. The next court mention is scheduled for 15 April.
