Two Singaporean men were each fined RM1,000 by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to disposing cigarette butts in a public area earlier this year.
Sessions Court Judge Datuk Che Wan Zaidi Che Wan Ibrahim imposed the fine on the accused, Lim Hu Shen and Tan Boon Haw, both aged 38.
The court also ordered that each offender serve one month’s jail if they fail to pay the fine, as well as complete six hours of community service within six months.
Hu Shen, an architect, and Boon Haw, a project manager, were charged with disposing solid waste, namely cigarette butts, at a public area instead of designated waste bins.
The offence was committed in front of the entrance of a shopping mall in Johor Bahru at 11.02am and 11.11am on January 3.
The charge was brought under Section 77A(1) of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672), which also allows for community service orders under Section 77B(1).
If convicted, offenders under the provision may face a fine of up to RM2,000 and a maximum of 12 hours of community service.
The prosecution was conducted by an officer from the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), Rubiah Maulud, while both accused were unrepresented.
