A 20-year-old university student was found dead in an apartment in Cikarang Utara, Bekasi, Indonesia, in an incident believed to be linked to the consumption of abortion pills obtained illegally.
Bekasi Metro Police Chief Senior Commissioner Sumarni said the victim had earlier gone to the apartment with several friends. After taking the medication, her condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly before she lost consciousness.
She was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Discovery Following Public Report
The case came to light after members of the public alerted authorities about a woman found unresponsive in a room at the apartment. Police officers who arrived at the location confirmed the death before transferring the body to hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause.
The incident has raised renewed concerns over the misuse and distribution of medication without proper medical supervision, particularly among young adults.
Five Arrested Over Illegal Distribution
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of five individuals believed to be involved in the sale and distribution of the abortion pills that allegedly reached the victim.
Police also seized several items, including mobile phones, a motorcycle and remnants of the medication suspected to have been consumed by the victim.
All suspects have been remanded and are being investigated on charges including premeditated murder, culpable homicide and offences related to the illegal distribution of controlled medication.
Authorities stressed that investigations are ongoing to trace the wider supply network behind the unauthorised drugs, including identifying the main supplier, in an effort to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
