A university student in his 20s was arrested along with his girlfriend, an SPM candidate, following a high-speed police chase on Monday. Authorities allege the couple had stopped by the roadside with plans to engage in sexual activity in the car.
“Investigations showed that the suspect had picked up the girl from a school in Jeli,” said district police chief Superintendent Kamarulzaman Harun. “They were startled when police officers on patrol approached their vehicle, prompting the student to flee before being apprehended.”
The student is now under investigation for offences under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, which carries penalties of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping.
Previously, he had been remanded for four days under Sections 186 and 279 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant and reckless driving, while his girlfriend was released on police bail. Authorities plan to apply for a fresh remand under the sexual offences statute.
