A bizarre hit-and-run incident in Taoyuan left 14 parked motorcycles heavily damaged after a van suddenly veered off the road and crashed into an entire row of bikes.
The accident happened on Thursday afternoon along Section 2 of Wenhua Road in Guishan District.
According to reports, the silver van was travelling toward Fuxing 1st Road when it suddenly lost control for unknown reasons and swerved directly into a roadside motorcycle parking area.
Surveillance footage showed the vehicle ploughing through the parked motorcycles, causing them to collapse one after another like dominoes.
The violent collision left the entire parking area in chaos, with motorcycle parts and broken debris scattered across the road.
Several motorcycles suffered severe front-end damage, while some storage compartments were reportedly smashed open from the impact.
Authorities confirmed that a total of 14 motorcycles were damaged in the crash.
A nearby pedestrian was also caught up in the incident and sustained minor injuries, though the victim was later treated at hospital and found not to be seriously hurt.
Witnesses said many nearby shop owners and customers were left stunned by the crash, especially given the wide two-lane road where the incident occurred.
The area is reportedly lined with businesses including convenience stores, banks and cosmetic shops, with many people parking their motorcycles there while running errands.
However, what shocked many most was the driver’s actions after the crash.
Instead of staying at the scene, the suspect allegedly abandoned the van nearby before fleeing on foot.
Police later located the vehicle and have since reviewed CCTV footage to identify and track down the driver.
According to Guishan traffic police officials, authorities have already contacted the registered owner of the van to assist in investigations.
Residents have since speculated online about whether the driver may have been intoxicated, under the influence of drugs or emotionally unstable at the time of the crash.
Police are continuing investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether additional criminal charges, including hit-and-run offences, will be filed.
Meanwhile, owners of the damaged motorcycles have been instructed to report to the police station regarding insurance claims and compensation procedures.
