A Singapore-registered vehicle sparked online discussion after it was seen leaving a petrol station along the Skudai Highway in Johor Bahru without paying for fuel on the night of January 21.
The incident, which took place at about 9pm, was initially believed to be a “pump-and-run” case before the driver’s family came forward to clarify the situation, according to China Press.
Petrol station staff said the male driver requested a full tank of RON97 fuel. While refuelling was in progress, a female passenger exited the vehicle to make purchases at the convenience store.
However, when she returned, the driver drove off immediately without making payment. Witnesses and other motorists reportedly honked to alert the vehicle, while station staff attempted to chase after it on foot but were unsuccessful.
The unpaid fuel amounted to RM139.01, and staff expressed concern as employees may be held responsible for unpaid bills, with one worker facing a possible salary deduction if the matter was unresolved.
Following a public appeal posted on Facebook on January 22 — warning that a police report would be filed within 48 hours — a family member claiming to be the couple’s child responded online.
The commenter apologised and explained that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between the parents regarding who was responsible for payment. The family said they would contact the petrol station immediately to settle the outstanding amount.
Another individual who claimed to know the driver personally vouched for his character, describing the incident as a moment of carelessness rather than an intentional act.

Petrol station management later said they believed the situation was likely an honest mistake, noting that they have served thousands of cross-border travellers over the past five years without similar incidents.
