King Tides Expected in Pahang Until December, Residents Urged to Stay Alert

Date:

Residents in coastal and low-lying areas of Pahang have been advised to remain vigilant as king tides are forecast to occur from today until December 25, potentially increasing the risk of flooding during the Northeast Monsoon season.

Kuantan District Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) engineer Rohushsyifa Ahmad Radzi said sea levels are expected to rise in Kuantan, Pekan, and Rompin, particularly at night and during the early morning.

“Residents, especially those living near rivers and low-lying areas, should take precautionary measures as flooding could occur if king tides coincide with heavy rainfall,” she said.

Speaking after a briefing on flood warning systems and telemetry station functions at Kampung Galing Surau, Rohushsyifa said data indicates that king tides are expected to occur from Nov 4–8, Nov 10–11, and again from Dec 3–7, Dec 9–11, Dec 20–22, and Dec 24–25.

She added that the Kuantan district has 57 flood-prone areas, with 19 siren stations currently being tested to ensure readiness. However, there have been reports of animal interference at some siren sites.

“If the public hears sirens sounding without reason, please inform JPS immediately so that we can take corrective action,” she urged.

Rohushsyifa explained that there are two types of siren alerts — a warning siren, which signals residents to prepare for possible evacuation when water levels exceed the warning threshold, and a danger siren, which requires immediate evacuation once water levels reach the danger mark.

The JPS continues to monitor coastal conditions closely as part of flood preparedness efforts across the state.
