Hot and dry weather conditions are expected to persist across Peninsular Malaysia, particularly in the northern region, until next Tuesday (Feb 10), according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
In a statement, MetMalaysia said the prevailing pattern of higher temperatures and reduced rainfall is likely to continue, although brief thunderstorms may still occur in isolated areas. The department added that the western parts of the Peninsula, as well as several locations in Sabah and Sarawak, remain vulnerable to thunderstorm activity over short periods.
The ongoing spell underscores the seasonal variability currently affecting the country’s weather system, with drier conditions becoming more pronounced in certain regions. Authorities noted that while rainfall is limited, sudden weather changes can still happen, requiring continued public awareness.
Earlier media reports indicated that four districts in Kedah have been placed under Heatwave Level 1 (alert) following persistent hot conditions. The affected districts are Kuala Muda, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu.
Each of these areas recorded daily maximum temperatures ranging from 35 to 37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days, meeting the criteria for the alert status. Such conditions, if sustained, could disrupt daily routines and increase health risks.
MetMalaysia explained that the alert level is issued when consistently high temperatures have the potential to affect public health and routine activities, especially among vulnerable groups such as children, senior citizens and individuals who are exposed to heat for prolonged periods due to work or lifestyle factors. Public health experts have also cautioned that heat stress can accumulate over several days, even without extreme single-day spikes.
In light of the situation, the public is advised to take precautionary measures, minimise exposure to extreme heat and ensure adequate hydration throughout the day. MetMalaysia also urged Malaysians to regularly check the latest daily heat status and weather updates via its official portal for timely information and related advisories.
