A man in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, known as A-Cheng (alias), has finally been granted a divorce after waiting 20 years for his missing wife, who disappeared after being deported from Taiwan.
According to the court ruling, A-Cheng married his wife, a woman from mainland China, in 2004, and the couple registered their marriage in Taiwan the following year. However, shortly after she entered Taiwan in April 2005, she was arrested for illegal sex work and subsequently deported back to China.
Since then, she completely vanished. Despite A-Cheng’s repeated efforts to locate her — through calls, records, and immigration checks — she could not be found. He said his wife only contacted him once by phone after being deported and never reached out again.
After two decades of searching in vain, A-Cheng decided to file for divorce through the Kaohsiung Juvenile and Family Court.
The court ruled in his favor, stating that the wife’s disappearance and lack of contact showed she had no intention of maintaining the marriage or living together. The judge concluded that the marriage had no chance of reconciliation, and that the wife was responsible for the breakdown of the relationship.
The divorce was officially granted, though the ruling can still be appealed.
