Woman Files Representation To Drop Charge Over Alleged Incident Involving Perak Sultan

Date:

A woman accused of using criminal force against the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, during last year’s National Day parade has submitted a representation to have the charge withdrawn.

Nurhaswani Afni Mohamad Zorki, 41, filed the application to the Attorney-General’s Chambers on February 6, her lawyer Zulzarif Zakuan confirmed. He said discussions between the defence and prosecution are ongoing, noting that the matter involves public interest. A decision on the representation has yet to be made.

The case was brought up before Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan, who fixed April 1 for mention pending the outcome of the representation.

On October 8 last year, the court declined to record Nurhaswani’s guilty plea after medical reports from Hospital Bahagia Tanjung Rambutan indicated that she was suffering from schizophrenia and was not of sound mind at the time of the alleged offence.

She is accused of rushing towards Sultan Nazrin on the grandstand in front of Ipoh Town Hall at about 8.20am on August 31 last year. Security personnel intervened before she could reach the Ruler.

Nurhaswani, who works at a fast-food outlet, is charged under Section 352 of the Penal Code for using criminal force, an offence punishable by up to three months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both. Police had previously stated that she was already under psychiatric supervision when the incident occurred.
