Woman Injured After Crossing Road While Using Phone Causes Three-Vehicle Pile-Up In Jalan Bangsar

Date:

A 20-year-old woman’s decision to cross a busy road while using her mobile phone led to a multi-vehicle accident involving a motorcycle, a luxury MPV, and a lorry yesterday. The incident occurred at Jalan Bangsar when the pedestrian attempted to cross from the left to the right shoulder of the road at a section not designated for foot traffic. Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, stated that the woman’s focus on her device significantly impaired her awareness of the surrounding traffic conditions.

The lack of attention resulted in a 31-year-old local motorcyclist, riding a Yamaha Y15ZR, being unable to avoid the pedestrian in time. Upon impact, the motorcyclist lost control of his machine and subsequently collided with two other vehicles that were stationary at a red light. The secondary victims of the crash included a Toyota Vellfire and a Hino lorry, both of which were waiting for the traffic signal to change when the out-of-control motorcycle struck them.

Fortunately, the collision did not result in any life-threatening injuries, though both the pedestrian and the motorcyclist sustained minor wounds. The woman was transported to the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), where she received outpatient treatment before being discharged. Meanwhile, the drivers of the Toyota Vellfire and the Hino lorry escaped the harrowing ordeal without any physical harm, though their vehicles were caught up in the chain reaction.

Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri confirmed the details of the accident in a press statement released today, highlighting the dangers of distracted walking in high-traffic areas. The authorities are treating the case as a reminder of the importance of using designated crossing zones and remaining alert while navigating city streets. This incident serves as a cautionary tale for both pedestrians and motorists regarding the immediate consequences of momentary lapses in concentration.

The police are currently appealing to any members of the public who may have witnessed the crash or possess relevant dashcam footage to come forward. Information can be shared by contacting the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or by visiting any nearby police station to assist with the formal investigation. Ensuring the safety of all road users remains a top priority for the Kuala Lumpur traffic enforcement team.
