A 37-year-old woman reportedly lost RM8,800 after being scammed through Facebook when she pressed a QR code to pay an RM8 deposit for washing machine repairs on Sunday.
The victim, a factory operator from Kampung Tun Razak, Bukit Katil, was browsing Facebook around 4 p.m. to find washing machine repair services. She came across a Facebook account offering repair services and contacted an individual via WhatsApp.
According to Melaka Tengah District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit, the suspect provided her with a link to make an RM8 deposit as a booking fee.
“After clicking the link, the victim noticed three separate transactions had been made from her bank account, resulting in a total loss of RM8,800,” he said in a statement today.
The victim realized she had been scammed and filed a police report at the Ayer Keroh Police Station around 9 p.m. the same day.
“The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating,” ACP Christopher added.
He also urged the public to exercise caution when making online transactions, especially when paying deposits via unverified QR codes or links.
