Health authorities have issued a warning after tests revealed that many herbal inhaler products are unsafe, posing particular risks to the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Wednesday that it had collected samples from multiple brands following online reports in May of fungal contamination in herbal inhalers, which could cause lung damage.
Laboratory tests confirmed contamination in the herbal inhalers “Hong Thai Formula 2” and Chama Herbs.
“The FDA informs the public that inhalers from both brands are substandard herbal products. Further announcements will follow if other brands are found to contain unsafe levels of microbial contamination,” said the FDA secretary-general.
Contaminants detected included microbes, fungus, yeast, and bacteria, which can be particularly harmful to people with immunodeficiency and older adults.
The Department of Medical Sciences reported that in 2025 it examined 54 inhaler samples, with 39 found to be substandard. Authorities advise consumers to avoid these products and remain cautious when purchasing herbal inhalers.
