This ‘Purple Superfood’ May Help Slow Aging and Control Blood Sugar, Experts Say

Date:

Many people worry that starchy foods can hinder weight loss, but food safety expert Wayne Yang (Yang Shih-Wei) says purple sweet potatoes may be an exception. Despite being a starch, they are rich in anthocyanins and dietary fiber, offering strong antioxidant benefits, supporting anti-aging, and helping slow blood sugar spikes. Taiwan’s Health Promotion Administration also notes that anthocyanins help protect eyesight, reduce inflammation, and improve gut microbiota.

On his Facebook page “Wayne’s Food & Farming Life,” Yang explained that purple sweet potatoes are a nutrient-dense root vegetable combining antioxidant power with stable blood sugar support. Their mild sweetness and high satiety make them an ideal staple during the winter.

The Health Promotion Administration added that anthocyanins—found in dark-colored foods like blue, purple, and red fruits and vegetables—are beneficial plant-based antioxidants that the human body cannot produce on its own, making dietary intake essential.

Yang highlighted several benefits of purple sweet potatoes:

  1. Strong antioxidant properties that help reduce chronic inflammation and oxidative stress.
  2. High fiber content that slows blood sugar rise and increases fullness.
  3. Prebiotic compounds that support healthy gut bacteria and promote regular bowel movements.
  4. Low calorie density, making them a suitable alternative staple for weight management.
