Losing weight may seem straightforward — eat fewer calories, stay active and create a calorie deficit. But have you ever wondered where the weight actually goes once the numbers on the scale begin to drop?
The answer may come as a surprise: much of the fat you lose eventually leaves your body through your breath.
When we eat fat, our digestive system breaks it down into fatty acids. These substances are transported around the body and used for important functions such as maintaining cell structures, regulating hormones, protecting organs and providing energy.
Any fatty acids that are not immediately needed are stored as triglycerides inside fat cells, known as adipocytes. The body mainly stores fat in two forms — subcutaneous fat beneath the skin, such as around the stomach and legs, and visceral fat surrounding internal organs.
When the body enters a calorie deficit and needs additional energy, it begins tapping into these stored reserves. Hormones and neurotransmitters signal fat cells to start a process known as lipolysis, which breaks triglycerides down into fatty acids.
Those fatty acids are then transported into the mitochondria inside cells, where they undergo a process called beta-oxidation. This allows the stored fat to be converted into energy that the body can use to power its various functions.
During this process, carbon from the fatty acids is ultimately converted into carbon dioxide. That carbon dioxide is then carried through the bloodstream to the lungs — and breathed out.
This means the scale is not simply recording fat “disappearing”. The atoms that once made up stored body fat are being transformed through metabolism, with a large proportion ultimately leaving the body as carbon dioxide.
Water also accounts for part of the weight lost during fat metabolism and is removed through bodily fluids, including sweat. Some estimates suggest around 84% of lost fat is converted into carbon dioxide and around 16% becomes water, although researchers say the exact proportions are difficult to determine.
Exercise and dietary changes can both contribute to this process. Eating fewer calories reduces the amount of energy coming in, while physical activity increases energy expenditure. Together, they can encourage the body to use its stored energy reserves.
However, losing weight is not simply about trying to “breathe out” more. The body needs a sustained energy deficit for stored fat to be broken down, meaning there is no shortcut where simply breathing faster causes meaningful fat loss.
Ultimately, the basic principle behind fat loss remains the same: consuming slightly fewer calories while prioritising nutritious foods and staying physically active can help the body draw on its stored energy. Exercise can also support muscle development and overall physical health.
