A serious medical dispute has emerged in Quwo County, Shanxi province, after a 53-year-old woman was left critically ill following a dental procedure in which 12 of her upper teeth were extracted in a single session.
The woman had visited a local dental clinic due to loose teeth, but after the procedure, she reportedly suffered acute myocardial infarction and shock. She was rushed to hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), where she was once in a life-threatening condition.
Family members and the clinic have yet to reach an agreement over compensation and alleged medical negligence. The local health bureau has since stepped in to investigate the incident.
According to the woman’s son, surnamed Han, his mother visited the well-known “Song X Rong Dental Clinic” on Dec 17 last year to consult about dental implants. He said the attending dentist had informed them that her upper teeth would need to be extracted, but assured them the procedure would be carried out in stages.
Han claimed that when the family signed the consent form, they were not told that all 12 upper teeth would be removed in a single session.
The family alleged that the extraction procedure lasted more than two hours. Afterward, the woman reportedly suffered a dislocated jaw and was in severe pain. She was rushed to hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with acute myocardial infarction.
During treatment, the patient was prescribed anticoagulant medication for a cardiac angiography procedure, which caused continuous bleeding from the oral wounds. She later experienced heavy bleeding, vomiting of blood, and fell into a coma, according to the family.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
