Malaysia’s public health Facebook page, “Public Health Malaysia”, has reminded the public that while many people use towels to dry their bodies and faces after showers, they often overlook the cleanliness of the towels themselves. A damp, unwashed towel can actually become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.
The page emphasized that a moist towel left in the bathroom is essentially a paradise for germs.
“Bathrooms are naturally humid, and after use, towels retain dead skin cells, oils, and sweat. This creates the perfect environment for bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and fungi to thrive,” the page said.
Using such towels can lead to skin problems, including acne (especially on the back), jock itch, and worsening eczema, potentially diminishing the effectiveness of even expensive skincare products.
The page advises that towels should be washed after 3 to 4 uses.
“Don’t wait for your towel to smell before washing it! This 3-to-4-use interval is the maximum before bacteria begin to multiply excessively,” it added.
For those with existing skin conditions like acne, eczema, or itchy skin, towels should be washed after every use.
Additionally, towels used to wipe off sweat after exercise should never be reused and must be washed immediately. During periods of illness or bacterial/fungal infection, do not reuse the same towel.
The page highlighted that personal hygiene is not just about soap but also the fabrics that come into daily contact with your skin. Regularly washing and replacing towels is a simple yet crucial step in preventing skin infections and maintaining healthy skin.
