AirAsia has cancelled or rescheduled several flights to and from Jakarta today after Soekarno-Hatta International Airport temporarily suspended operations due to volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
The airport halted flight operations until 9.30am local time, or 10.30am in Malaysia, as volcanic ash was detected in the area.
AirAsia said the ash posed a significant safety risk to aircraft, prompting the airline to make operational changes to selected flights whose routes could be affected.
“AirAsia has notified all affected guests of their flight status and recovery options,” the airline said, according to Bernama.
It added that it was working to ensure affected passengers could continue their journeys safely on the next available flights.
Passengers travelling to or from Jakarta were advised to check their latest flight status through AirAsia’s website or contact the airline’s customer support team.
Reuters earlier reported that the airport suspension had affected 33 flights, including several international services.
Mount Anak Krakatau has been erupting since late Friday, with volcanic ash detected at the airport early Sunday, according to Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry, Reuters reported.
