Three children were rescued after allegedly attempting to end their lives by walking into the sea in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, reportedly telling witnesses they wanted to escape from their drug-addicted father.
The siblings, all below the age of 18, were spotted entering the water together in Khanom district before members of the public intervened and brought them back to safety. No injuries were reported.
According to witnesses, the children claimed they had endured repeated abuse at home involving their father, who they alleged had developed behavioural issues linked to drug use.
They also claimed that they were forced to ask strangers for money, with the funds allegedly used by their father to purchase drugs.
The incident was brought to the attention of Member of Parliament Pimphattra Wichaikun, who worked with relevant agencies to visit the family’s home and assess the children’s situation.
During the visit, officials met the children’s grandparents, who said the father was being held at a police station after allegedly attempting to attack family members.
The grandparents claimed the man had repeatedly abused them and the children, as well as assaulted neighbours and members of the public who attempted to intervene. They also said the children’s mother had previously left the household due to safety concerns.
The children reportedly expressed fears that the alleged abuse could continue after learning their father might be released from custody within 10 days.
Authorities said efforts were underway to find a long-term solution to protect the children, including ensuring they can return to school and live in a safer environment.
Officials added that further legal action would be considered, including possible offences involving child exploitation and alleged physical abuse.
The children’s grandfather has urged police to extend the father’s detention, saying he was concerned about further violence against the family and members of the community.
Police have yet to issue an official statement regarding the detention status or any additional legal proceedings.
