A schoolgirl has died after a 15-year-old female student allegedly went on a stabbing spree at a school in Istanbul, injuring seven other students.
The attack took place at Sheikh Shamil Imam Hatip Middle School in Basaksehir on Wednesday morning, with the victims reportedly aged between 10 and 13.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gul said the suspect, who attends a different school in the same neighbourhood, entered the school premises wearing a school uniform and allegedly stabbed the students indiscriminately.
Authorities initially said two of the injured students were in serious condition, with one undergoing surgery. Five others suffered minor injuries and were expected to be discharged later in the day.
However, one of the injured girls later died from her injuries, according to officials.
Basaksehir district governor Cemil Ozgur Onegi said seven female students were injured in the attack, identifying the suspect by her initials as F.M., a 10th-grade student.
Local reports said the suspect previously attended the school where the attack occurred but had since transferred to Fahreddin Kerim Gokay Anatolian High School in another district.
Gul said the suspect lived close to the school and had entered the premises before carrying out the attack.
Police arrested the teenager following the incident, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.
Gul expressed his condolences and said prayers were being offered for the injured students, adding that treatment for the remaining victims was ongoing.
