A 32-year-old Indonesian man is expected to be charged today after he was allegedly caught carrying a knife concealed in his footwear while passing through a security screening area at Changi Airport Terminal 4.
According to The Straits Times, the 19.5cm knife was detected by an X-ray machine operated by a security officer at the departure hall yesterday.
The weapon had a 12cm blade and was reportedly hidden inside the man’s right high-cut shoe.
Following the detection, the man was escorted to a search room, where officers discovered the sheathed knife concealed in his footwear.
Police said the weapon had been wrapped in several layers of plastic bags and secured with tape, apparently in an attempt to conceal it.
The man is due to face a charge of carrying an offensive weapon in a public place.
If convicted, the offence carries a maximum jail term of three years and a mandatory minimum punishment of six strokes of the cane.
The incident also highlights the strict security checks in place at Singapore’s major aviation hub, where prohibited or potentially dangerous items are screened before passengers proceed further into the airport.
