A family holiday in Türkiye ended in tragedy after a 39-year-old factory worker died when he dived head-first into just 50cm of water at a hotel pier.
Arif Erman, who worked at a tyre factory in Sakarya, was holidaying with his family at the popular resort destination of Alanya when the fatal accident happened on the afternoon of the 4th.
According to Turkish media outlet Patronlar Dünyası, the incident took place at around 3pm at a hotel pier in the Konaklı area of Alanya, Antalya.
Erman had reportedly walked towards the safety rope around the pier and spent some time looking at the water. Despite prominent signs warning visitors not to dive, he allegedly ignored the warnings before running towards the water and diving head-first.
However, the water at the spot was only around 50cm deep.
Erman struck the bottom of the water heavily and lost consciousness. People at the scene and nearby members of the public rushed to rescue him before he was taken to hospital for emergency treatment.
Despite efforts to save him, Erman was pronounced dead. Police and relevant authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Erman lived in the Akçay town of Sapanca district in Sakarya and worked at a tyre factory. He was married and had three children, and was reportedly the family’s main breadwinner.
What was meant to be a family getaway instead ended with Erman’s loved ones preparing to bring his body back to Sapanca, where his funeral and burial will take place.
