A woman in Jinan, China’s Shandong province, has come under fire after photographing her neighbour while he was naked inside his own home and sharing the image in a residents’ chat group to complain about his behaviour.
The incident, which occurred on June 28, has sparked widespread debate over privacy rights after the woman accused the man of behaving inappropriately by being fully nude in his apartment with the curtains open, claiming it could negatively affect neighbours and children.
According to local reports, the woman took a photograph of the man through her window before posting it in the residential community’s messaging group, urging others to take action.
However, the move quickly backfired as the man accused the woman of violating his privacy and announced that he had reported the matter to police.
Many residents in the chat group also criticised the woman, arguing that while she could have privately reminded her neighbour to close his curtains, sharing his photograph publicly was an invasion of privacy.
Legal experts interviewed by Guangdong Radio and Television said a person being naked inside their own home is generally considered a private matter, provided there is no deliberate intention to expose themselves to the public.
The lawyer added that distributing photographs taken inside another person’s home without consent may constitute an infringement of privacy rights. The man could demand that the images be deleted, request a public apology and, in serious cases, seek compensation for damages.
The incident has also triggered heated discussions on Chinese social media, with many users siding with the man and accusing the woman of overstepping personal boundaries.
Some commenters argued that what someone does inside their own home is their private affair, while others said the woman should simply have looked away or privately raised the issue instead of publicly sharing the photograph.
Police are reportedly investigating the complaint lodged by the man.
