A primary school student in China reportedly fell from the seventh floor of a residential building and landed on a BMW parked below, severely damaging the car.
The incident happened in Hengyang, Hunan, between 2am and 3am on Monday, according to the car owner, identified as Mr Zhou.
Zhou told reporters on Sept 8 that the child allegedly fell through a security grille on the seventh floor and crashed onto his BMW.
The impact severely damaged the car’s sunroof, seats and other parts.
The child’s parents reportedly left a note explaining that their child had been sleepwalking when the incident happened. The child was taken to hospital for treatment, while the family has been discussing compensation with Zhou.
Despite the extensive damage to his vehicle, Zhou said his priority was the child’s safety and that there was no need to rush the compensation process.
His insurance company has also become involved, allowing more time for the matter to be resolved.
“A car that saves a life is hard to come by. Once the car is repaired, I will continue driving it,” Zhou said, according to the report.
The incident has drawn attention online, with many praising Zhou for showing understanding towards the family during what was reportedly a frightening situation.
The incident has also highlighted the importance of safety measures for children who have a history of sleepwalking, particularly in high-rise homes.
Families are advised to strengthen window grilles, install window restrictors and take extra precautions at night to reduce the risk of children wandering into dangerous areas while asleep.
The incident serves as a reminder that accidents can happen unexpectedly and that proper safety measures should not be overlooked.
