A gruesome double murder investigation is underway in Cambodia after the bodies of two missing individuals were discovered buried inside a drainage well that had been sealed with concrete in the capital, Phnom Penh.
The victims, a 38-year-old taxi driver identified as Ai Kim Soon and a 36-year-old transgender woman known as Tang Simon, had been missing since May 23.
Their bodies were discovered on June 1 after police traced leads provided during the investigation and uncovered the hidden burial site on a vacant plot of land.
Cambodian authorities have arrested one Chinese national in connection with the case, while another Chinese suspect remains at large.
Police believe additional individuals may have been involved in the killings and are continuing efforts to identify and apprehend possible accomplices.
According to local reports, investigators located the burial site after questioning one of the suspects. The bodies were found inside a drainage well whose opening had been deliberately covered and sealed with concrete in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime.
At the scene, police recovered several items believed to be linked to the murders, including an axe, a metal baseball bat, electrical wires, plastic cable ties and construction tools.
Preliminary forensic findings revealed that Ai Kim Soon died after suffering severe blood loss when a major blood vessel in his left leg was severed by a sharp weapon.
Meanwhile, Tang Simon was reportedly bound with electrical wires and plastic ties before being strangled to death.
Authorities confirmed that both victims were murdered.
The case first came to light when relatives of Ai Kim Soon reported him missing on May 23 after losing contact with him. Two days later, police located the taxi he regularly drove in Kandal province, south of Phnom Penh.
However, investigators were unable to locate him until the discovery of the bodies nearly 10 days later.
Tang Simon, who worked at a karaoke establishment, was last seen on the evening of May 23 after accepting an invitation from a customer.
According to her boyfriend, she left the venue in a taxi driven by a driver who regularly transported her and was never heard from again.
He reportedly attempted to track her location through her mobile phone but was unable to find her, prompting him to file a police report.
The shocking discovery has sent shockwaves through Cambodia, with police continuing to investigate the motive behind the killings and whether a wider criminal network may have been involved.
Authorities have vowed to track down all suspects connected to the case as the investigation continues.
