A 26-year-old Brazilian woman plunged to her death from the seventh floor of a hotel after the window frame she was leaning against suddenly gave way.
Renata Rebeca Negrão Saldanha dos Santos was in São Luís, a city in northeastern Brazil, with her boyfriend, Leonardo Augusto Pinto França, to attend a poker championship, Brazilian news portal g1 reported.
The incident happened at around 1.30am local time on Nov 3 at the Rio Poty Hotel.
CCTV footage captured the moments before and after the fatal fall, showing the couple walking unsteadily along a hotel corridor.
Brazilian authorities said the pair were intoxicated at the time.
In the footage, Pinto França is seen bumping into an upper window, accidentally opening it before closing it again.
Shortly afterwards, Saldanha dos Santos appears to lean against the lower window, seemingly sitting on its frame, before it suddenly gives way and she falls backwards.
Her boyfriend is seen standing motionless for about 10 seconds, apparently stunned by what had happened, before crouching down and looking out through the window.
A hotel employee later approaches him as he explains the situation.
The woman’s mother has since expressed her grief over her daughter’s death and called for justice.
Brazilian authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including examining the window from which Saldanha dos Santos fell.
Pinto França was taken to a police station for questioning but was not considered a suspect at the time, according to an earlier g1 report.
He told investigators that the couple had been dating since July 2026 and that he could not remember the incident because he had been drinking throughout the night.
The hotel has issued a statement expressing its condolences and pledged to fully co-operate with the authorities.
