A fashion retailer in China has come under intense scrutiny after a female customer was allegedly exposed while changing clothes in a fitting room when a child suddenly pulled open the curtain, leaving her fully naked in front of several male shoppers.
The incident, which took place at fashion brand ONEMOMENT’s outlet in Zhengzhou’s Financial Island Yintai inPARK, quickly went viral on social media and sparked widespread outrage over customer privacy and store safety standards.
According to the woman, she had already noticed problems with the fitting room before the incident occurred.
In a social media post, she claimed the changing room curtain was damaged and could not be properly secured, creating what she described as a serious privacy risk.
Moments later, a child allegedly pulled open the curtain while she was completely undressed.
The woman said the situation became even more distressing when she realised several male customers were standing outside the fitting area at the exact moment the curtain was opened.
She alleged that some individuals remained at the scene watching, while one person was even seen leaning towards the doorway to look inside.
The customer further claimed that one male shopper continued staring at her after the incident, leaving her feeling deeply embarrassed and violated.
Adding to her frustration, she said store employees failed to intervene, stop onlookers from gathering, or provide immediate assistance and reassurance following the incident.
The controversy rapidly gained traction online, prompting ONEMOMENT to issue a formal public apology on June 22.
In its statement, the company admitted to three major management failures that contributed to the incident.
The retailer acknowledged that the magnetic fasteners used to secure fitting room curtains were not sufficiently strong and may not have been properly maintained or replaced when damaged.
The company also admitted that no signs were installed to prevent members of the opposite sex from entering sensitive fitting room areas and that staff failed to manage the situation appropriately when the incident occurred.
ONEMOMENT said it fully accepted all requests made by the customer and had launched a nationwide review of its fitting room facilities.
The company pledged to inspect all changing room privacy systems, immediately stop using fitting rooms that cannot be fully secured and replace existing magnetic curtain fasteners with stronger hook-based fixtures across its stores.
The retailer also offered to cover any counselling or psychological support expenses if required by the affected customer.
Online users later pointed out that promotional photographs previously shared by the store appeared to show significant gaps around fitting room curtains, with only a single attachment point in the centre, potentially allowing curtains to be easily pulled open.
The design has since come under criticism, with many questioning whether sufficient consideration had been given to customer privacy and safety.
Founded in Shanghai in 2023, ONEMOMENT is a fast-fashion brand targeting Generation Z consumers and currently operates stores across 22 cities in China.
The incident has reignited broader discussions about privacy protection, fitting room safety and the responsibilities of retailers in safeguarding customers from humiliation and unwanted exposure.
