17-Year-Old Football Star Mistaken for Squirrel and Fatally Shot At The Back of Head

A 17-year-old high school football star in Iowa, Carson Ryan, tragically died after being accidentally shot by a hunting companion who mistook him for a squirrel. Authorities have confirmed that the incident is under investigation to determine the exact circumstances. In the wake of his death, friends and family have launched a fundraising campaign that has raised $53,876 USD (around MYR 246,000).

According to reports from the New York Post and other outlets, the incident occurred on the afternoon of September 27 in Brighton, Iowa, when Ryan was hunting with friends. He was struck in the back of the head and, despite being rushed to the hospital, succumbed to his injuries. The local Department of Natural Resources confirmed that the shooter was a member of the same hunting party, and investigations are ongoing.

Ryan was a star athlete at his high school, playing football and also participating in soccer, basketball, and track and field. He was well-loved by teammates and classmates alike. The football team posted messages of mourning on social media, and the school held a memorial service on the evening of September 28.

A fundraising effort organized by friends and family has already raised over $53,000 USD (around MYR 246,000) to support Ryan’s loved ones. The organizer said, “Carson was a son, a friend, and a light in the lives of many. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled.”
