A 19-year-old Malaysian man and his 25-year-old Indonesian female accomplice were taken back to multiple crime scenes in Singapore on Thursday to assist police with investigations into a series of alleged loan shark harassment cases.
The Malaysian suspect, identified as Mohamad Zikri, and the Indonesian woman, Nur Latifah, were escorted by officers to residential blocks in Bedok Reservoir Road and Tampines to reconstruct the alleged offences.
The pair were charged on Wednesday under Singapore’s Moneylenders Act. If convicted as first-time offenders, they face fines ranging from S$5,000 to S$50,000, up to five years’ imprisonment, and a maximum of six strokes of the cane.
According to local reports, both suspects arrived at the first location at around 10am, wearing white tops, black shorts and slippers, with their hands and feet restrained.
During the reconstruction, the Malaysian suspect reportedly became emotional, breaking down in tears and trembling as he spoke to investigators and explained the alleged incidents.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian suspect was accompanied by an interpreter to assist with communication during questioning.
Police later brought the pair to the affected residential unit and the nearby rubbish chute area, where investigators spent about 10 minutes gathering information. White paint stains were still visible on the unit’s entrance and floor.
The suspects were then taken to another residential block in Tampines Street 61, where investigators continued the reconstruction. Although the white paint had been cleaned from the unit’s door, faint traces remained on the ground. CCTV cameras were also seen installed outside both affected units.
Police believe the duo carried out a series of harassment acts beginning in the early hours of August 2, allegedly splashing paint on homes and pasting threatening notes that warned: “Today it’s just paint. Next time, wait and see how I burn it.”
The pair were arrested within nine hours of the first police report being lodged, with officers seizing two mobile phones during the operation.
Preliminary investigations indicate they are believed to be linked to at least 10 loan shark harassment cases across Singapore.
Both suspects remain in police custody to assist with investigations. The case has been adjourned until August 11.
