22-Year-Old Chinese Student Pleads Not Guilty to Stabbing Ex-Girlfriend

Date:

A 22-year-old Chinese national, You Wei, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court today to a charge of stabbing his former girlfriend at a private university in Sunway on July 14.

According to Free Malaysia Today, You was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt. He allegedly stabbed the woman on the left side of her neck with a knife. When the charge was read, You stated that he understood but “disagreed.”

If convicted, the offence carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, or a fine, whipping, or any combination of the three.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal urged the court to deny bail, citing You as a flight risk. However, his lawyer, Revin Kumar, argued that You is undergoing treatment for bipolar disorder and would not flee, as he is still completing his studies in Malaysia.

Judge Norazlin Othman granted bail of RM20,000 with two sureties and imposed several conditions: You must surrender his passport, report to the nearest police station monthly, and is prohibited from contacting the victim or any witnesses.

The case is scheduled for mention on September 17.

Police previously reported that a 21-year-old foreign man had been arrested for attacking a 20-year-old woman, also a foreign student, at the university in Subang Jaya. The victim sustained slash wounds to the left side of her neck and was rushed to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, where she was placed in the emergency red zone for treatment.
