A police pursuit involving a suspicious vehicle in Kuala Lumpur on Monday has led to the arrest of a 29-year-old local man and the discovery of equipment believed to be linked to cable theft.
The incident began at around 9.30am when officers from the Bukit Aman KESAS Highway Traffic Police spotted a green Ford Ranger behaving suspiciously while they were conducting patrols.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said officers signalled for the vehicle to stop, but the driver allegedly ignored the instruction and sped away.
Police pursued the vehicle from the Awan Besar Toll Plaza towards Klang (West) and later to Jalan Hang Tuah 4 in Sri Petaling. During the chase, which lasted about 30 minutes, police were forced to fire a shot at the vehicle’s rear right tyre.
Fadil said the suspect later stopped near a petrol station in Sungai Besi but allegedly refused to cooperate and attempted to ram a police officer, prompting officers to fire at the tyre.
“The suspect then drove into Jalan Hang Tuah 4 before losing control of the vehicle and crashing into a grey Mazda,” he said in a statement on Monday.
Following the crash, police managed to apprehend a 29-year-old local man, while another suspect believed to have been driving the Ford Ranger fled the scene.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered various items and tools believed to have been used in cable theft, along with cables suspected to have been stolen.
Police checks also revealed that the detained suspect had 37 previous criminal records and was listed as a wanted person.
The case is being investigated under Sections 307, 427 and 379 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Fadil said police would apply for a remand order against the suspect under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code on September 1.
Authorities are continuing efforts to locate the second suspect, who remains at large, while investigations are ongoing.
