5,801 Squishy Toys Seized Nationwide For Failing To Meet Safety Requirements

Date:

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) has seized 5,801 squishy toys worth RM70,428 nationwide for failing to display the required Safety Compliance Mark.

KPDN enforcement director-general Datuk Azman Adam said the seizures were carried out through 15 enforcement actions during nationwide inspections conducted from October 1 to 14.

A total of 1,845 premises were inspected, covering manufacturers, importers, wholesalers and retailers.

Azman said the ministry took toy safety seriously and would not compromise with businesses that failed to comply with regulations under the Consumer Protection Act 1999.

He also urged the public, particularly parents, to check product labels and safety compliance marks before purchasing toys for their children.

Consumers who suspect that unsafe or non-compliant toys are being sold can lodge complaints via WhatsApp at 019-848 8000 or 019-279 4317, through the ministry’s e-Aduan portal at e-aduan.kpdn.gov.my, by calling 1-800-886-800, or through the Ez ADU smartphone app.

In a separate case, Azman said a trader was fined RM1,000 by the Putrajaya Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to misleading representation in an advertisement.

The case followed a customer complaint after the buyer received a jubah instead of the baju kurung shown in the advertisement.

Azman said the incident occurred on February 27, 2024, and prompted an investigation that eventually led to the trader’s prosecution.

The trader was charged under Section 10(1)(a) of the Consumer Protection Act 1999 and sentenced under Section 25(1)(b) of the same Act.

The RM1,000 fine has since been paid.
