An 81-year-old woman died after falling to the ground and being run over by a car that fled the scene at a residential parking area in Penang on Tuesday.
The victim, identified as Li Yayi, was reportedly getting out of an e-hailing vehicle at the Desa Green flats parking area in Solok Slim when she lost her footing and fell.
CCTV footage showed Li attempting to get back on her feet when another car entered the frame and ran over her before speeding away.
Two people who were at the flats’ lobby rushed to help after the incident, but Li later succumbed to her injuries.
Her son expressed anger at the driver, saying the motorist did not stop or get out to check on his mother before leaving the scene.
“My mother lost a lot of blood, and there was blood all over the place,” he said, adding that the CCTV footage did not capture the vehicle’s registration number because the camera was positioned some distance from the incident.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad confirmed the incident and said police received information at 3.50pm.
Li was pronounced dead at the scene at 2.48pm after suffering severe head injuries.
