A 43-year-old Taiwanese man has been arrested after allegedly killing his Thai girlfriend following an argument over their breakup, then concealing her body inside a suitcase and hiding it in a freezer at his office.
The man, surnamed Wu, was arrested by Taiwanese authorities on Sept 19 after a manhunt. The alleged killing took place on Sept 12 at a hotel in Ximending, Taiwanese media SETNews reported.
Wu and the woman had reportedly been in a relationship for more than a year and frequently travelled between Taiwan and Thailand to see each other.
According to EBC, the woman had planned to end their relationship in early August. She arrived in Taiwan on Sept 2 and was due to return to Thailand on Sept 14. The pair reportedly met almost every day between Sept 2 and Sept 11.
On Sept 12, Wu allegedly went to the woman’s hotel carrying a 30-inch suitcase. The two reportedly argued after she raised the subject of breaking up.
Wu allegedly strangled the woman during the argument before placing her body inside the suitcase. He then reportedly drove south to Taichung.
When the woman’s family was unable to contact her on Sept 14, they alerted police through a friend in Taiwan.
Wu was arrested on the morning of Sept 19 and taken to his office, where police allegedly discovered the woman’s body inside a freezer.
According to SETNews, Wu’s colleagues had previously asked about the freezer after it appeared at the office. He allegedly told them he had bought ingredients to prepare for the Mid-Autumn Festival.
During questioning, Wu reportedly admitted that he was unhappy about the woman’s decision to end the relationship. He allegedly told investigators that he killed her because he believed there was no longer any hope of reconciliation.
The investigation is ongoing.
