A 41-year-old food delivery rider was arrested after allegedly leading police on a chase from Sri Petaling to Cyberjaya, crashing into several vehicles in the process.
The suspect was driving a Nissan Vanette when he was spotted using his mobile phone behind the wheel along Jalan Merah Silu in Sri Petaling at about 1.20pm on Saturday.
Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said two policemen on routine patrol in a mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) attempted to stop the van.
However, instead of obeying their instructions, the driver made a U-turn and sped off, prompting the officers to pursue him.
“The pursuit continued from Sri Petaling towards the Maju Expressway (MEX) before the suspect was eventually intercepted along Persiaran APEC in Cyberjaya,” he said.
Hoo confirmed that the suspect had collided with several vehicles during the chase, adding that the affected motorists were expected to lodge separate police reports.
Videos of the incident have since circulated on social media, showing police vehicles pursuing a van amid traffic congestion, with one police vehicle seen activating its emergency lights.
Another clip, believed to be CCTV footage, showed a silver van passing through a toll plaza.
A search of the suspect’s vehicle found no prohibited items. However, a preliminary urine screening test returned positive for methamphetamine.
Police checks also revealed that the suspect had a criminal record involving four previous narcotics offences, Hoo said.
Police have seized the Nissan Vanette and are working to identify its registered owner to assist with the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his duties.
Police are expected to apply for a remand order against the suspect on Sunday.
